Exposition: In sonata form the exposition is the first part of the movement (preceded in some cases by an introduction), in which the main thematic material is presented. It opens in the tonic and invariably concludes in a new key, by convention the dominant in major-key movements and the relative major in minor-key ones. Development: The procedure, particularly in a sonata form movement, by which some or all of the thematic material from the first section (the exposition) is reshaped motivically, harmonically or contrapuntally, or in any combination of those ways. Recapitulation: The third and last main division of a movement in Sonata form, in which the thematic material introduced in the first section (the exposition), either in the tonic or in a contrasting key, is restated, normally all in or around the tonic. Drone: A sustained droning sound, or a musical instrument or part of an instrument which produces such a sound and maintains it throughout a piece or section of music. |

Tchaikovsky's Sixth SymphonyThe first movement of Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony is presented in a traditional sonata form. Sonata form comprises three distinct sections: the exposition, development, and recapitulation. Below is an illustration of the first movement's structure and form:
Music for Hardingfele: Svein I Sy' Garde'The Boy on his Farm' has a sectional form, presenting a few basic melodic phrases, then repeating and developing them throughout the rest of the piece. This is all accompanied by a foot beat which creates a polyrhythm against the main melody. Below is an illustration of the basic structure of the piece:
Above is a comparison of Bars 18-19 and Bars 27-28. As illustrated in the table, the differences are minimal: the second iteration in Bars 27-28 has an appoggiatura onto the B, and the first in Bars 18-19 has the inclusion of a pedal tonic B.
